The Atlantic Mackerel, known locally as “Lokarda”, is a highly abundant and economically important species in the Adriatic. It has a sleek, torpedo-shaped body with iridescent blue-green coloring and distinct wavy stripes. Mackerel is valued for its high omega-3 content and is often grilled, smoked, or marinated in vinegar and herbs. Croatian fishermen traditionally prepare it by grilling over an open flame with a drizzle of lemon juice and olive oil.
